In-House Commercial and IP Lawyer

Leeds Beckett University – University’s Secretary Office

Grade 7, £39,152 - £44,045

???????With origins dating back to 1824 Leeds Beckett is a modern, professional university with a proud history and an ambitious future. Leeds Beckett University supports a community of more than 28,000 students and has around 2,800 staff.

We are seeking an additional lawyer to join our existing in-house legal function and work specifically in the Research and Enterprise function whilst reporting to the university’s Head of Legal. This is an interesting role that will involve you working in partnership with this function and the in-house legal team to optimise the university’s benefits and minimise its risks.

You will manage a full and varied caseload of legal matters using internal expertise or externally commissioned advice as appropriate, and you will need to be able to work independently to an extent, although always can seek support from and bounce ideas off the existing legal team.

We are looking for a lawyer with some experience in commercial, IP and/or data protection work. Qualified Solicitors from an in-house or private practice background will be considered, as will candidates without a Solicitor qualification if you otherwise have the right experience and approach.

Applicants who are seeking a flexible approach to work and a better work/life balance, whilst still working on high-quality contracts often involving significant investment, are encouraged to apply. This job can be appointed on a flexible or part-time basis to suit the individual if you are the right fit, and home/office working will be embraced. The team is truly collaborative and it is a nice place to work.

Ideally, applicants will have at least an understanding of the motivation of academic researchers, the UK research funding environment, and the commercialisation of research. The role will involve the negotiation of complex commercial contracts and sound knowledge of intellectual property and data protection law.

Working here will mean that you will also have access to a wide range of benefits including our generous pension schemes, excellent holiday entitlements, flexible working, reduced study fees, subsidised fitness facilities and a lot more.
